WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

How we go about doing things

1

Specification

We need to nail down the client’s requirements and expectations. We work together to create a scope and costs document that details what we are building and what we are charging.

2

Visual Assets

The client provides us with any photography or brand files that they wish to be included in the site. This imagery should be provided in its original format at full resolution.

3

Initial Design Consultation

In the design consultation we look at competitors websites and other inspirational sites that are relevant to the client’s needs. We explore the client’s key messages and how they need to be laid out.

We tend to find that layout is mostly decided by the messaging and UX/UI requirements, the detailing and the colour scheme decided by the logo and brand guidelines, there will be some styling influence from inspirational sites, and then there will be a little freedom for us to make additional design embellishments that add character.

4

Build

Unlike other agencies we design our sites straight into code. This is partly because it is our key skillset and we are really good at it. But its also because since we don’t use plugins, and we don’t have to work around 3rd party limitations, we are in complete complete control of our code, so we can design in code almost as fast as a designer with Figma.

It also helps that we maintain obsessively organised code libraries to draw already polished resources from.

5

Second Design Consultation

We go over the design and functions of the new site with the client. Clients have complete freedom to keep changing the design and layout. Thought it’s rare that any client wants to do more than make a few tweaks, but there are no formal limitation to design alterations.

6

Content

The client will need to provide us with written content for the site. Alternatively we can introduce an external copywriter into the project if needed.

7

Testing

We test the site thoroughly and it goes through a rigorous quality control process. However, it is worth noting that as standard we provide compatibility with currently supported versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. If you require a website to support older browsers then this needs to be specified and there will be an additional fee.

8

Sign off

We show the website to the client in a private development area. We make any required alterations until the client is happy to sign the website off as ready to go live.

9

Go live

If the client wishes to host with us the website’s dns setting will need to be changed. This can be done from the domains control panel. We can either login to the clients control panel ourselves to make the changes or we can provide the server details to the client or a 3rd party for them to make the change.

If the client wishes to use their own or a 3rd party’s hosting then we need the login details to that hosting platform to allow use to set the site live.

10

Training

Our sites are built to be easy for the client to update and manage inhouse. To support this we have a few training options. First, we can provide 1-to-1 training via zoom. Second, we can provide access to our library of common content editing videos. Third, if your site is unique, we can create a custom series of training videos for your specific website.

11

Support

After launch, we remain involved with maintenance, optimization, and ongoing development. If you are hosting with us, tech support is included with the hosting fee. If not then support is billed by the hour.

FAQS

Website Development

We build ultra high performance websites with loading times usually between 0.2s and 0.7s. We often get our clients performance scores in the Google PageSpeed insights tool as high and 99% on mobile and 100% in desktop. However, it is worth noting that heavyweight content and functions such as auto play videos and Google Maps API will affect this.

You do. Your website is yours. You can host it with us or move it and host it yourself.

You can. We use our own content block builder, but all images and text are changeable, and it is easy to add new content and pages.

But it is worth being clear that we follow a separation of content and style. Styling rules are global and are hard coded into the theme. This allows for consistency of style as the site scales up, whilst maintaining cutting edge performance and stability. But if you do want to change the style, we, or really any developer, can do that for you.

Yes, we can provide one-to-one training sessions online if required and we have a library of helpful how to videos for common alterations and t make it easy to onboard new team members. If your website is especially complicated, we may also create project specific training videos.

We build websites that set you up to succeed in search engines. Our loading performance beats the competition; our sites are easy for search engines to understand and index; automatically populate with appropriate meta information; and we follow Google’s best practices and our sites usually get a 100% SEO score in Google PageSpeed insights tool.

However, we do not provide keyword research, copywriting, or link building. We do have working relationships with SEO consultants who specialise in these services and can provide introductions.

Yes. Our websites are fully GDPR compliant. GDPR compliance is actually more difficult than it sounds and many newly built websites fail some of the eight basic tests of GDPR compliance.

These tests are:

  1. Are non-essential cookies loaded before the user agrees?
  2. Can the user control cookies by classification?
  3. Are boxes pre-ticked? Boxes cannot be pre-ticked.
  4. Are accept and reject options equally present and have the same design emphasis?
  5. Is there a complete and detailed list of what cookies are loaded and what they do?
  6. If a user accepts cookies is it easy for them to go back and reject them?
  7. If a user accepts and then rejects the cookies are the rejected cookies removed?
  8. Is accepting non essential cookies, or email marketing, a requirement of a service that doesn’t actually need them to function?

These are the basic tests of cookies compliance. If the website passes these then it is compliant. By please note that this is the basic list that applies to all websites. If you are storing more personal information on the website there will be other requirements.

Yes, we provide everything under one roof. We provide managed hosting using high performance Digital Ocean servers based in London. Our hosting company provides proactive issue identification and investigation, and we stay on top of updates and if there is an issue we resolve it. Usually issues are identified and quietly resolved before either the client or their users are aware of it.

Any additional work that is not covered by the tech support is billed at £80 / hour. Alternately a 10 hour retainer can be purchased at a discounted rate of £600. Such retainers need to be paid for before the work commences.

Our hosting tech support covers us maintaining the proper functioning of the website as we have built it. If something we have built is not functioning properly as it was specified then it is our responsibility to fix it.

However this tech support does not cover:

  • Content updates to the website.
  • Development of additional feature and functionality.
  • Resolving issues caused by 3rd parties.
  • Issues caused by plugins which we did not install ourselves.
  • Providing additional training to new team members.

Projects times vary with complexity and of course we have limited studio capacity and we need to schedule work in. But our usual website project takes between 2 to 5 days of actual work, and this can usually be completed in 2 to 3 weeks of us getting final approvals. And of course if something is urgent we may be able to get it turned around faster.

Of course. Its kind of amazing that this is a question people still have to ask, but apparently some web developers still struggle with this.

All of our websites are designed to work well on all screen sizes.

Of course. All of our websites, from the simplest brochure site to the most complex eCommerce booking system share the same fundamental code base that provides a thorough foundational for additional development. In fact you may find that we have already built the additional thing you want for another client and can easily transplant that feature onto your own site.

Well, you can… but we strongly recommend against it. Plugins cause 96% of WordPress issues (Source: Patchstack); they introduce security issues; can greatly damage loading performance; greatly increase the resources that the site uses on the server; they can shorten the expected lifespan of a website; and issues with them are not covered by our tech support included with our hosting.

However that said, ultimately it is your website, and you can install additional plugins if you wish.

Yes. Our servers take daily backups each morning and retain backups for about a month. Also when moving websites off our servers we commonly take backups of the site that we then store offline.

Our websites are far more secure than the average WordPress website. We follow a ‘Don’t be lazy security standard’. WordPress itself is secure. Its bad security reputation comes from people taking shortcuts.

Unfortunately most WordPress agencies don’t actually do their own coding and use plugins to build out functionality, without realising that these plugins are just a stranger’s code, and that every plugin, and all of their future updates, have complete power over the website and its server. Plugins cause 96% of security issues (Source: Patchstack). Off the shelf themes caused 4% of security issues. WordPress itself caused only 0.001% of issues.

Our methodology of coding websites ourselves, rather than relying on unknown 3rd party plugins, allows us to avoid exposure to all those risks.

We have only had security issues with our websites when 3rd parties, usually seo consultants, have installed plugins.
